What is Functional Freeze?

Functional freeze is a dorsal-led nervous system state where the body is in survival but performance continues.
It says:

  • feel emotionally disconnected
  • live with chronic fatigue or brain fog
  • struggle to access joy, desire or motivation
  • keep pushing through instead of responding to themselves
  • feel “stuck” despite doing all the right things






This is trauma that doesn’t look like trauma.
It looks like responsibility.

“I must not feel but I still have to function.”

What is Functional Anxiety?

Functional anxiety is sympathetic-led mobilisation without enough safety or completion.
It says:

This is why so many people:

  • live with urgency in their body
  • find it hard to switch off their thoughts
  • feel restless, tight-chested, wired or braced
  • need certainty before they can relax
  • struggle to slow down without panic
  • “do” constantly but never feel done

And because the nervous system can’t stay mobilised forever, people often swing between the two:

“I must keep going or something will fall apart.”

Functional anxiety → functional freeze → functional anxiety → functional freeze.
Like driving with one foot on the accelerator and one foot on the brake trying to move forward but getting nowhere fast……

When you slow down, what happens first?

If anxiety spikes, thoughts race, panic rises → this is FUNCTIONAL ANXIETY.


If heaviness, numbness, emptiness or collapse appears → this is FUNCTIONAL FREEZE.

Most people in functional freeze have been trying to “calm down” a system that doesn’t need calming.
It needs movement, safety and permission to come back online.

Most people in functional anxiety have been trying to “think” their way into safety.
But your physiology will always override your psychology.

MODULE 1 Functional Freeze: Understanding Your Nervous System State

You learn what functional freeze really is, and why you are not failing, you are adapting.

Inside this workbook you will:
  • identify your freeze cues across body, emotions, behaviour and relationships
  • explore the core question: what happens when you slow down?
  • recognise how freeze helped you survive
  • track your “energy / numbness / irritability / over-functioning” levels without judgement
  • practise gentle orientation to safety so your system can begin to thaw
  • name what you need more than fixing right now

This module is where shame begins to dissolve because you finally have a map.


MODULE 2 Functional Freeze vs Functional Anxiety: Work With Your Actual State

This is the module that stops you doing “the right tools” for the wrong state.

Inside this workbook you will:
  • learn why freeze and anxiety can look similar on the outside but feel completely different inside
  • use side-by-side comparisons so you can accurately recognise what’s happening in your system
  • identify whether you are mostly freeze, mostly anxiety or a mix
  • learn what each state actually needs so you stop overriding your body
  • uncover where you’ve been mislabelled for years and what hasn’t been working
  • practise orientation so your nervous system registers safety before change

Accurate naming creates safety and safety creates capacity.

MODULE 3 Capacity, Not Calm: Regulation in the Presence of Real Life

This module breaks the “I’ll be okay when…” loop.

Inside this workbook you will:
  • uncover your “waiting language” and what it has protected you from
  • see what waiting has cost you, and how it keeps you stuck
  • learn the difference between calm and capacity and why capacity is what you need
  • take a current capacity snapshot across boundaries, emotions, conflict, rest, visibility
  • practise the 2% rule so change is tolerable and sustainable
  • learn how to stay present during discomfort without abandoning yourself

This module teaches your nervous system that life doesn’t have to be perfect for you to be okay

MODULE 4 Thaw Without Flooding: When Freeze Starts to Lift

This module is where people often panic and think they’re “getting worse.” You’re not.

Inside this workbook you will:
  1. understand why irritation, restlessness and emotion can be signs of thaw
  2. learn to spot early thaw signals without fear
  3. distinguish thaw vs flooding so you stop doing too much, too soon
  4. identify your personal early warning signals
  5. learn pacing strategies including titration and pendulation (activation ↔ safety)
  6. practise orientation after thaw work so your system ends in safety

This is where the nervous system learns that movement can return without chaos.

MODULE 5 Staying Present in Activation: Building Capacity at the Edge

This module is for when you’re no longer shut down but you’re not settled yet.

Inside this workbook you will:
  • learn why activation is not automatically dysregulation
  • map how activation shows up in your body and behaviour
  • identify your habitual protection responses (shut down, distract, overthink, push through)
  • find your capacity edge, not comfort, not overwhelm
  • practise staying present for a few seconds longer to build real capacity
  • learn that recovery is part of capacity, not an afterthought

This module is where you learn that I can feel energy and still be safe.

MODULE 6 Functional Anxiety: Mobilisation Without Safety

This module helps you stop living in urgency as your default.

Inside this workbook you will:
  • understand functional anxiety as a strategy, not a failure
  • learn the difference between urgency-driven mobilisation and choice-driven mobilisation
  • map how functional anxiety shows up in your thoughts, body, emotions and behaviours
  • identify what keeps anxiety going (incomplete stress responses, lack of safety, stillness triggers)
  • explore completion vs suppression and why suppression keeps you stuck
  • learn discharge tools that settle without collapse
  • practise orientation so your system registers safety, not threat

This is where urgency starts to soften because your system learns completion.

MODULE 7 Ventral Without Performance: Regulation Without Self-Abandonment

Because looking calm is not the same as feeling safe.

Inside this workbook you will:
  • learn the difference between performative “green” and embodied “green”
  • identify how you learned to perform safety (people-pleasing, compliance, masking)
  • recognise the subtle signs of true ventral regulation
  • build connection without self-abandonment
  • identify boundaries that create safety rather than guilt
  • practise ventral capacity skills without forcing

This is where you learn that I can be connected without disappearing.

MODULE 8 Integration: Capacity for Real Life

There is no finish line. There is only more choice.

Inside this workbook you will:
  • define what integration really means (not constant calm, but quicker return)
  • compare “before” and “now” so you can actually see what has shifted
  • build your personal nervous system map for freeze, anxiety, activation and ventral
  • apply capacity in everyday moments: conflict, pressure, rest, connection, decisions
  • create your self-led repair plan for when you slip
  • identify what you no longer need to do as capacity increases
  • orient toward the future with resources and reminders that keep you anchored

What if I’m not sure whether I’m in functional freeze or functional anxiety?

You do not need to be certain. This programme teaches you how to recognise your nervous system patterns over time, without labelling or forcing change. Many people move between states and that is normal.

Is this therapy?

No. This is a somatic, nervous-system-led educational programme. It does not replace therapy, but it often complements therapeutic work very well.

What if I feel worse before I feel better

As freeze begins to soften, you may notice more sensation or emotion. This is why the programme is paced, titrated and capacity-focused. You are never asked to push through overwhelm. If you choose Container or Immersion, you have additional live support during this phase.

I’m busy, do I need lots of time each week?

No. Each module includes a 15-minute teaching video and practices you can integrate into daily life. This work is designed for real people with real responsibilities.

What if I fall behind?

Nothing is time-limited. You have lifetime access. Your nervous system sets the pace.

Will this make me calm all the time?

No and that is not the goal. CAPACITY is about being able to stay present, resourced and self-connected even when life is challenging.

Hello, I’m Caroline Strawson, a multi-award-winning Certified Trauma Informed Coach, Hay House Author and Nervous System Expert and founder of The Mental Wellbeing Company and the School of Healing & Growth.

But before any of that, I am human…… just like you.
In 2010, my life collapsed. I left a relationship marked by domestic abuse and coercive control, was left with over £70,000 of debt, and became homeless while raising my children. At the time, I didn’t have the language to understand what had happened to me. I just knew I was living in constant fear, overwhelm and survival.

Eventually, I was diagnosed with complex PTSD. I was experiencing depression, anxiety, panic attacks and self-harm. What made this even harder was the shame. I had a medical background and I was doing everything I had been told to do like counselling, psychotherapy, talking it through, trying to understand it logically.
And yet, I wasn’t getting better.
I remember thinking, Why isn’t this working? Why am I still stuck when I’m doing all the right things?
What no one explained to me was that trauma doesn’t live in the mind alone. The support available to me was almost entirely top-down. It helped me make sense of what had happened, but it didn’t help my nervous system feel safe enough to change.
The missing piece was a bottom-up approach.

No one taught me about survival responses, nervous system dysregulation, or why my body was still living as if the danger had not passed. I was being asked to think my way out of something my body was still trying to survive.
That realisation changed everything.

My own healing journey, combined with my background in neuroscience, coaching and therapeutic training, led me to build the system I wish had existed when I needed it most. A system rooted in nervous system capacity, safety and embodied healing not just insight.
Today, I train others to deliver trauma informed support that works with the nervous system, not against it. In a world where mental health and trauma support is overstretched, fragmented and inaccessible for so many, I believe we must build new, ethical, nervous-system led pathways to healing.

That is why this work exists and why it is so needed.
